  •    CTHI is now offering the Travel Management & Operations program (TMOS), a three-day intensive training course on becoming a professional travel agent. The course is accredited by the Department of Tourism (DOT) and serves as partial fulfillment for accreditation with the DOT, as mandated by Republic Act 9593. For inquiries, please call 584-7343.
  •   Together with the Canadian Embassy and the Asia Food Channel, CTHI participated in the special cooking demo event with Canadian rock & roll chef Chuck Hughes. CTHI showcased exciting flairtending performances with the live music of Razorback band and served "O, Canada" - a CTHI special mocktail concocted exclusively for the Canadian Embassy in Manila.
  •                   Why study for four years? This is a question the folks behind the Canadian Tourism and Hospitality Institute (CTHI) like to ask. They are referring to students who spend four years in college, only to end up jobless. The CTHI counteroffer is job-oriented training for two years or less. Samie Lim, CTHI president, admits there are already too many tourism schools in the country. “But there’s little genuine professional training,” he says. “Despite their four-year degrees, our graduates do not meet the personnel needs of resorts, hotels, restaurants, even cruise ships in the travel and tourism industry.”  
  • CTHI recently conducted a sold-out Cocktail Mixing 101 series attended by more than 300 participants. During the 3-hour lifestyle course, the participants learned how to mix the world's most popular cocktails and design basic garnishes. They were likewise treated with bottomless cocktail samples and an exciting flairtending exhibition. CTHI will conduct another Cocktail Mixing 101 series from March to May 2012.   • Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines His Excellency Christopher Thornley with CTHI-Manila President Samie Lim, CTC-Surrey President Kim Russell and CTC-Vancouver President Gwen Donaldson, inspecting the newly installed computer lab at the Mandaluyong Campus Franchising guru and tourism stalwart Samie Lim said that Filipinos are expected to be the executives of choice and the Philippines to be training hub in the region for tourism in ten years. Lim, president of Franchise Investment Holding Inc. (FIHI), told reporters in an interview at the inauguration of the Canadian Tourism and Hospitality Institute (CTHI) through a franchising agreement with the Canadian Tourism College. CTHI is the first international franchise of CTC.
  •   CTHI recently conducted a successful seminar series for home stylists and home makers where they learned how to recreate the look and feel of a 5-star hotel bed in their own homes. Hotel suppliers and senior rooms division executives of leading hotel chains presented on selecting the right mattress, perfect bedding ensembles and pillows, as well as distinguishing the best fabric types and materials for maximum comfort.   • Investing in education should be treated in the same manner as embarking on a new business venture. It is when personal gratification derived from the exercise is just one factor to consider. After all, doing things for the soul is a luxury that only the privileged can always afford. For the majority who look forward to earning a living from the training they get in school, an education in the hospitality industry is attractive because of current employment opportunities. However, the cost and length of education should be carefully weighed vis-a-vis income potential.

  • The Canadian Tourism & Hospitality Institute (CTHI) will be putting up two campuses in Boracay and Cebu by next year and 20 more branches in various tourist destinations in the country. During yesterday’s launch of CTHI’s first campus, CTHI president Samie Lim said the aim was to put up a branch in key tourist spots in the country, starting with Boracay and Cebu. The first campus, on the second floor of the Paragon Plaza in Mandaluyong City, would be a pilot campus, he said. Another company-owned campus would be put up, followed by 20 more that would be owned by franchisees. The CTHI campus in Mandaluyong is a franchise of the Canadian Tourism College from Vancouver.

  • H.E. Christopher Thornley, Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines   His Excellency Christopher Thornley, Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines, cited the Canadian Tourism & Hospitality Institute (CTHI) as a truly Filipino-Canadian partnership that represents how Canada can really bring something to the Philippines that can help the country’s economic growth.   He added that he sees the entry of the Vancouver-based Canadian Tourism College to the Philippines as a huge potential for Filipinos to create wealth as they develop strong careers, jobs and livelihood in the tourism sector that can help them raise their families.   “CTHI has been in the industry for thirty (30) years, so they really represent some of the best that we have in Canada in terms of universities, colleges and private education institutions,” said Amb. Thornley.  
  • A 3-hour coffee appreciation course entitled “Coffee 101: Know your Brew, Learn the Difference” was conducted at the Canadian Tourism and Hospitality Institute last July 9, 2011. The seminar was attended by coffee lovers, enthusiasts and entrepreneurs. The course covered the basics about the world’s favorite drink – from the history, sources, industry, to the different types, blends, processes, and equipments used. The participants were also treated to free-flowing coffee of different types. Coffee 101 is one of the many interesting and exciting lifestyle courses lined-up by CTHI for the rest of the year.   • CTHI conducted its 3rd Advanced Waiter Training Seminar last June 12-13 with participants from Bubble Tea, Buon Giorno (Tagaytay), El Pollo Loco, Jelatto Restaurant (Naga City), House of Minis, Avengoza Catering, Jack and Jenn Catering and Chef Jimmy Culinary Services. The seminar covered topics on improving customer service, increasing sales and profit, handling customer complaints and creating new and repeat business. The training is a professional development program specifically designed for captain waiters, senior servers, F&B managers, restaurant supervisors and new restaurant owners.   •   CTHI conducted its first Advanced Waiter Training for restaurant managers, supervisors, head waiters, F&B personnel and new restaurant owners last April. The intensive hands-on training was participated by renowned establishments such as Manila Hotel, Franchise 1 Hotel, Via Mare, Pepper Lunch, Oysterboy, Figaro Coffee, Wendy’s, Fruit Magic, La Scala Music Bar & Café, Mom & Tina’s Bakery and Segafredo Espresso.

Apologies to the organizers, but December’s slate is really packed full, short of crazy in fact, so like most other events I have missed, I had to rely on the video of the crew we sent over.
